A ROOM WITH A VIEW

How fortunate I am to have a special room in my home where I have an unbelievable view. It is officially known as the sunroom because it has six large windows that let the rays of sun shine into the entire space. It captures the morning glow, the afternoon rays and the magnificent hues of the setting sun. As the seasons change, so do the colors that stream into this room. However, none of them disappoint. The amount of light and sense of warmth varies throughout the year, but the view is always a feast for the eyes.

The inviting feel of the room is actually derived from a combination of the inside and outside. This room with a view allows me to sit on the comfy sofa and gaze through the glass French doors to the outside. It is also the room where I join my Parkinson’s pal to take our virtual exercise class, where I read my get-away-from-it-all books and where I have long chats with my dear girlfriends.

So what makes this room so special? It is totally the view! It is so peaceful and calming. The first thing that catches your eye is the deck. This time of year, it is adorned with all types of flowering plants, including firecrackers, petunias, lantana, mandevilla, knockout roses, hydrangea and herbs and with a multitude of birds. Much to our surprise the hummingbirds routinely gather daily to feed on the trumpet-like firecrackers and the other birds (blue birds, cardinals, wrens, chickadees and blue jays) take turns on the two feeders attached to the railings. We have even had a rare, but treasured visit from a male and female painted bunting!

As wonderful as this is, an even greater view is seen beyond the bird community as we are treated to a year long view of our dock and waterfront. The joy of seeing a mama dolphin and her baby glide in and out of the water is a treasure to watch. The rare sighting of “Oscar” the otter sunbathing on our dock also makes us smile. Yet, it is the ongoing signs of live bait and fish jumping that gives us a view into another whole world. All of this leaves us with a sense that we are just a small part of a much larger creation. A good perspective to keep in mind.

I understand that not everyone has a room with such a glorious view, but I do think it is important to create a space in your home, studio or apartment where you can find solace and peace, Perhaps a comfy chair next to a vintage table can serve this purpose. Also, try to find a spot in your bedroom or bathroom where you can hang a picture of a serene view or of a saying or quote that brings you joy and peace. The idea is the same, create an area that evokes the calm severity that we all seek and need thus making it your own room with a view…
