Lazy Day

“I Don’t Feel Like Doing Anything Today!” I love this song from Bruno Mars. (Click on the YouTube link below to see and hear it.) I like the song because it has a good message and the music is upbeat and catchy. The lyrics are relevant to exactly how I feel some days. I just do not feel like doing anything. I do not want to clean the house, wash the laundry, cook a meal, shop at the store or even read a book or watch television. I guess I feel lazy and that’s ok!

In our very fast paced world, we all need days to dial it down and relax. Many of us feel guilty when we do this because we are so used to being on the go and accomplishing things. In our culture, productivity means success. Success is often viewed by the big house, new car and amount of toys we have accrued. But is that really how we want to measure our worth? Quantity of things does not equal quality of life. Often the more things we have the harder we have to work to pay for them and maintain them. This becomes overwhelming and we forget what is truly important.

One of the most valuable commodities we have is time. We cannot buy it or sell it, but we can appreciate it. So how do we get more time to do what we want? Prioritize and be ruthless! Make what is important to you come first, or at least second. For example, most of us want, and frankly need, more play time. Make a date with yourself and plan something you truly enjoy doing. Do not cancel it because you feel guilty about taking time for you. Somehow we confuse down time with being lazy, Who said lazy is a bad thing? Perhaps we all need to schedule a lazy day once a month and just do nothing.

So how did a career-minded, family dedicated, over ambitious woman, such as myself start talking about being lazy? Parkinson’s. Yes, once again I found sometime positive from this degenerative disease. There are days where my energy level is far below my activity level, thus, I feel lazy. This used to frustrate me and make me feel anxious and upset that I was not like I used to be, a multitasking maniac. However, the past couple of years, I have learned that there are definite advantages to slowing down and relaxing my mind, body and soul. It is regenerating and I eventually end up with more ambition and energy because I took a pause instead of pushing through when I really need the rest. Try it, even if you do not have a chronic condition.
