Pride and Prejudice

Pride and Prejudice

Yes, one of my favorite Jane Austin’s books is Pride and Prejudice, but I am not referring to her work in this post. I am talking about the pride that comes from seeing someone make a treasured item and feeling good about the way it comes out. And the prejudice (perhaps bias) I have because the someone I am referencing is my wonderful daughter-in-law, Dia.

Recently, I have been seeking ways to reduce stress while doing something fun and enjoyable. I started to crochet again and thought that Dia may like to do it also. As I have learned, needlework allows me to watch television, have a conversation or ride in the car while I continue with my project. Also, for me it is an important way to keep up with my fine motor skills that often diminish with Parkinson’s. I have mentioned in previous posts that I have had to adapt to the tremors by using bulkier yarn and larger hooks and needles, but I get the job done and still have a blast doing it.

A couple of weeks ago, I bought some yarn and a crochet hook for Dia and we practiced some basic stitches for making a pillow cover. As we enjoyed a cup of tea together, Dia completed several rows with very little guidance. True, she had learned some of the basics a few years ago, but Dia’s ability to work at such a fast pace while making perfect stitches reminded me that she is a natural. Since then, she completed the pillow cover (with a little help from Mama Weathers, her talented mom) and went on to start and finish a coordinating afghan/blanket.

There is truly something special about starting and finishing a project which pleases you. The sense of accomplishment far exceeds any other feeling you get when you simply go out and buy it. The only thing better than this is the pride I have in seeing Dia do something well and knowing that she is having fun. And yes, I agree, I am a bit prejudice when it comes to the best daughter-in-law in the world!
