Cookies, Cookies, Cookies
While the rest of the world attacked Black Friday with vengeance , my Mom and I played Christmas music and spent the day making cookies. We made all types of marvelous wonders and by the end of the day, there were cookies on every surface of the kitchen and dining room. After they all cooled, we finally got to pack them into Tupperware to freeze and later made up several boxes to be distributed to various special cookie receipents. It was a day of making memories for decades.
Mom and I started planning our cookie strategy earlier in the week so there were not unnecessary trips to the grocery store. We checked out our favorite recipes and made a list of all of the ingredients that we would need. So after the big turkey dinner, mom and I would regroup and hit the kitchen running on Friday morning. It went something like this:
Mom made the peanut butter blossoms with the chocolate kisses on top.
I would start with the famous-family chocolate chip recipes- one batch of soft and chewy and one batch of crispy and thinl
Mom’s next recipe was her wonderful macaroons with almond extract, so yummy.
While Mom finished up with those coconut treats, I tackled the butterscoth haystacks. They are a three ingredient cookie that are so easy to do ,but just win over my kids.
Next. Mom made her fabulous boil candy-like cookie. They are everyone’s favorite and I am close to making them as well as mom’s, but not quite.
Finally, I finish the day with those wow sugar cookies in the shapes of trees, wreaths and hearts. I ice them with colorful Christmas hues and they always appear at the top of the gift box. When someone opens the box, they are wowed by their presentation.
My Mom passed on 10 years ago this December, but her presence is always with me. Today Mom’s handwriting is on every recipe I use and her hand is on mine calming my tremors as I measure the ingredients and most of all her love fills my heart as I make our Christmas cookies together,
I love you, Mom.
