Playtime and Playclothes
I remember recess in elementary school, it meant playtime. Each school day included a time where we went outside and played. Sometimes we played on the swing set, sometimes in the big field adjacent to the school and sometimes inside if it rained. The goal was simple, play. Play with friends, learn to share and take turns and just get a break from sitting at a desk all day. Sooo sweet.
Then there was playtime after school and on weekends. It was clear when it was time to play because I had to change into my playclothes. They included shorts, peddlepushers, or corduroy pants. And there was always a sweater, specifically a cardigan. There were no hoodies, or sweatshirts, or jogging pants. Playclothes looked like play clothes. They were worn, comfortable and usually handed down from a sister, a cousin or a church member. I loved my play clothes because they transformed a boring day into a fun packed time. My playclothes did not have designer labels. In fact, I do not think they had labels of any kind. They looked a lot like my friends’ playclothes and my cousins’ playclothes.
I still have playclothes. I put them on when I come home from the world. I instantly feel more relaxed and comfortable. My playclothes are called lounge wear, but they serve the same purpose. They are not work clothes, dress-up clothes or church clothes and they clearly mean a transition is occurring in this part of the day. I may not be climbing trees or swinging on a tire like I did as a child, but I will still have playtime in my playclothes
Play is important. Find time everyday to fit it into your life. Your body and mind will thank you.
