Zippers, Buttons and Snaps! Oh My!

Zippers, Buttons and Snaps! Oh My!

A challenge for all people with Parkinson’s Disease is handling activities of daily living, such as dressing themselves.  Tremors and buttons do not mix!  I first encountered this realization while shopping for clothes and finding it impossible to button the blouse I was trying. Thank goodness for helpful sales ladies. Good Parkinson’s days lead to fast dressing.  Bad Parkinson’s days, not so much.... Here are some tips to make smart and stylish clothing choices:

*Fabrics with stretchability, like knits with Lycra, are great.

*Elastic waists are our friends.

*Dresses that slip over the head are always better than those with zippers.

*Cardigans with no buttons also keep you warm.

*Rain jackets with hoods are easier to maneuver than umbrellas.

*Hats are essential for days when hair styling is just not happening.

*Infinity scarves are easy to use and can make an outfit.

*Shoes with bungee laces or those that slip on rule.

*Long chains and flexible bracelets make wearing jewelry much easier.

If you are thinking selecting these user-friendly items equals frumpy, think again. I have found many stylish items that just happen to accommodate my clothing challenges. I especially recommend J Jill, Chicos and Simply Noelle for fabulous fabrics and friendly designs. All of these brands offer frequent sales making their products affordable.  If you are also a Wal-Mart shopper, as I am, you can find excellent items by using the simple guidelines.  For example, Wal-Mart carries the Danskin line which offers easy-to-wear active clothing and shoes at reasonable prices.

Happy Shopping.
