Welcome Autumn
I love the crispness in the air that comes with the autumn weather. I have especially enjoyed it living in the south. The summers are longer and hotter here so it actually feels good to have a change in the temperature after several months of hot and humid weather. I welcome the chance to go on a bike ride, take a hike, or walk along the beach in the cooler air. And now after Hurricane Florence hit, I am truly enjoying a new start to a new season with the hope of better things to come. So many people are still effected by the devastation of the storm that occurred only a short time ago, leaving tons of damage. Days without power in the hot and humid conditions created unlivable spaces for hundreds of people and I pray they will find relief in the cooler days ahead. A change of season is a good thing.
Along with weather changes, autumn brings comfort foods, sweaters, pumpkin picking, and tailgaiting. It represents a time to gather friends and family together for a meal and a warm dessert. This weekend we are invited to a “gathering” at our dear friends’ home for a roast dinner with mashed potatoes and vegetables. I am bringing the dessert. Apple crisp.. Because autumn means pie, cobbler and crisp, just as summer means shortcake, ice cream and watermelon. It is exciting to mix up the menus with the seasons and to take advantage of the locally grown products of each season. Now root veggies are available and ready to be served raw, steamed, baked and tossed in a salad. Apples are in season and are handy as a “fast food” or used to make an apple crisp. Yummy.
As part of the clean up after the hurricane, I cleaned all of my closets so we could get to the areas where water dripped from roof problems. It was therapeutic to go through clothes, household goods and bedding to sort what I needed to keep and those things I could give for others to use. It shows me how much stuff I have and motivates me to let go of things. Fewer stuff means less clutter which is good for my mind, body and soul. The organization of my surroundings helps me feel good about my living space and makes me feel some control after the chaos of the hurricane.
I have also decorated with some fall accessories. A jewel-tone candle, a pumpkin wreath and some cinnamon sticks add warmth and scent to our home which has been through a lot lately. I am in no hurry for the shorter days that come with this season, but I do enjoy bringing out the fluffy throws and comfy pillows that feel good on cooler nights. These little touches inside just accent what is going on outside.
So let’s savor the signs of the season. Linger in the autumn breeze and don’t be drawn into the next season of Christmas so quickly. The retail stores would like you to move pass the pumpkins and into the ornaments, but resist. Enjoy the colorful tones of the trees outside and the crispness of the air. Take a walk, make a big pot of soup and, yes, put some mums on the front porch. Appreciate the season and all it has to offer. Welcome fall with open arms, and don’t forget your sweater!
