Laughter Is The Best Medicine

Laughter Is The Best Medicine

Last week I went line dancing with a couple of my girlfriends and then we enjoyed a lunch with chat time. As usual we covered a variety of topics including family updates, recent trips and just fun talk. We had lots to discuss since we had not seen each other for quite awhile. Before we knew it, we were chuckling, giggling and then full-out laughing. When we started laughing, we could not stop. It is interesting how that happens. You can just feel how great it is for your body and mind to laugh. It is like a mini-vacation for your entire being.

So what makes us laugh and why does laughing feel so great? From a physical sense, laughter, an emotional response, comes from the frontal lobe of our brain. While the left side is responsible for interpreting the words and structure of a joke, it is the right side that determines whether the joke is funny or not. (Sciencealert.com) Most of us react to humor several times a day, often with a smile or a grin. It is an enjoyable sensation that research has shown to be good for us by improving our immune system.

I also notice that laughter is contagious. When someone has a belly laugh, it encourages others to join in even though we might not have thought the joke or incident was that funny. Television producers have known this for years which is why “canned laughs” were incorporated in so many shows.

I hope you get to have some really hardy laughs today. It may be the best medicine you can take to keep healthy!
