OK, what crazy thing is this gal with Parkinson’s doing now?
I have decided to try keeping my cognitive functions in tact by learning the ancient game of MAHJONG. As my readers know, I am always trying to challenge myself because of, or in spite of my Parkinson’s. Physically I do this by exercising, but I have found the mental afflictions of this condition sometime far outweighs the physical ones. This is why I continue to seek new ways to tweet the brain . This month I have decided to learn how to play MAHJONG .
My close friend suggested it as she has been playing it with a group of her friends. When I first learned that it is complex and requires the ability to strategize, memorize and be fairly competent at making quick decisions, I thought i would not be able to handle it. However, I decided to go for it…
Wow, I am so glad that I decided to pursue it. I approached our local community senior center and was blessed to find a wonderful, amazing teacher who shares her knowledge and skill for the game in a relaxed environment . I also am thrilled to have a group of women who are patient and understanding of my Parkinson’s at my table. We learn, we laugh and we move forward…… How incredibly lucky am I to have found such a special teacher and coplayers.
Once again, I remind my Parkinson’s partners to go for it…whatever “it“ is. Try it, you may find a new treasure in your life…… I know I have!
