Sundays

Sundays

During the week, I often have to think, “What day is it?” I get Tuesdays and Wednesdays mixed up all of the time especially since I have been retired. It is interesting how much of our life is scheduled or marked by specific activities. For example, I know yoga is on Tuesday in the morning and that line dancing is on Friday at 11. I know one of our local restaurants serve tacos for a dollar on Monday and another one serves muscles for half-price on Tuesday. You see I remember important things, such as fun events and food goodies without ever having to write them in my calendar.

There is one day each week that stands out from the others and that is Sunday. It has always been a special day for me even when I was little. Sundays meant Sunday School and family time. There was always Sunday dinner, although, that was usually served at lunch time after church at the home of one of my aunts, grandmothers or cousins. In the evening, we had Sunday supper which was informal and often included soup and bread. As a teenager, I attended the youth group meetings at the church, but was always home in time to finish the homework I put off during the weekend. I especially remember great winter Sunday evenings when our youth group had ice skating parties on a nearby pond with hot chocolate and marshmallows. My cousin, Judy, and I wowed the group with our skating abilities. We could not do triple axles, but we could skate backwards!

As I have aged, I still feel Sunday is special. The morning is spent with good friends at church. The afternoon is often enjoyed with the family (including all six pups) in the pool, on the boat or just hanging out together. And just like my childhood days, Sunday evening means eating a lite supper, watching our favorite shows and regrouping for the start of another week.

I know I will always rank Sunday high above the other days. Perhaps it is because in my faith, Sunday is the Sabbath and that makes it more than special, it makes it sacred. Peace.
