Decorating For The Fun Of It!

My girlfriends and I love to decorate our homes. We decorate with just the right colors, textures, accents and themes. We decorate for the seasons and the holidays. It is creative and uses our imagination. We never get tired of helping one another make decisions about each other’s interior designs and shopping for the perfect pieces. Why do we enjoy this so much? It’s fun!

I think that decorating is a creative extension of my personality. Just like selecting fashions and jewelry, I get to mix and match colors and patterns that are pleasing to me. Most of the time, my husband loves what I do and is happy with the results of all my efforts. But sometimes, I think he just does not notice or care as long as it makes me happy. Occasionally, when he does not like something I have carefully picked, I ask if he would like to go shopping with me to replace it and somehow he changes his mind realizing he really does like what I selected!

So what is the key to good design? I think it is doing what YOU like and not worrying what others may think. Of course, this is always easier said than done, but it is important to make yourself happy with your surroundings. Choose items that are pleasing to your color palette, just as you do with your wardrobe. Combine different color hues, Mother Nature does it everywhere. Also, feel free to mix things up. If you have old pieces from your family display them openly even if your other decor is contemporary. If you like the items and they bring happy thoughts and memories to you, then use them. They make your home distinctly yours. It’s fun!

A couple of my friends and I like to change our decor often. I sometimes just take my favorite things from one area of the house and relocate it to other places. I do not need to buy anything new and yet I get a totally different look. I rotate pictures, rugs, wreaths, vases, etc. It is fun to mix it up and redecorate. Occasionally, I change everything. I find good bargains on bedding and window treatments and I make my own pillow covers. At the end of a day, I can transform an entire room and step back with a smile with a sense of pride. It’s fun!

So take a chance, live on the edge, mix it up and decorate just for the fun of it!
