Turkey Dinner!
During November, I seem to cook more than I have during the previous months. The weather is getting cooler and the days are shorter. For some reason, this makes me want to plan and prepare meals for my friends and family. It is this time of the year that I make comfort food especially turkey dinners.
My husband’s favorite meal is a turkey dinner with all of the trimmings. I enjoy making it for him and watching him savor every morsel of the stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, peas, drumsticks and gravy poured over everything. Of course, the meal must end with pumpkin pie and homemade whipped cream. Each time I make this feast, he tells me how much he loves it as if it was the first time he ever had it. I smile and feel good that I can still impress him after all of these years.
Now comes the fun part. The next few days after indulging in a big delicious dinner, we enjoy “gobblers.” My kids think I invented this delicacy, but I am sure I got the recipe from my mom who got it from my grandmother. At any rate, I have made gobblers for the family the day after every turkey dinner I have served and I am pretty sure I have served a million of them! (Ok, a slight exaggeration.) What are gobblers? They are sandwiches made with toasted fresh rye bread, mayo, turkey, stuffing (lightly warmed), and cranberry sauce. They are served with potato chips, pickles and a cold glass of milk. They always bring my grown kids home for a gobbler and, yes, I admit I use gobblers to bribe my family and it works! Ahhhh, life is good….
