Recently, I discovered the beautiful practice of yoga. Of course, I have heard of the benefits of this global form of art and exercise, but did not incorporate it into my life until last year. I am surprised how much I love it. To be clear, I am still a beginner and I am ok with this. I attend a gentle stretching yoga class a few times a month and incorporate the breathing techniques into my daily living. It has been especially beneficial to me because of my Parkinson’s. Stretching my muscles helps calm my “jiggles” and focusing my breathing helps calm my mind. As I practice the positions and techniques, I gain a sense of control over the Parkinson’s and feel stronger and less anxious. It is interesting that yoga requires discipline, yet it leaves you feeling open and free. The paradox is the more you practice yoga, the less restrictive you feel from your condition.
In the beginning of the class, our amazing instructor always shares an enlightening passage which gives your mind food for thought. In the background, music plays softly during class which enriches the session and little white lights add a soft glow to the room. As I enter and place my yoga mat on the floor, I transition into a relaxing state even before the class starts. I notice my tremors begin to diminish as I prepare myself for the class. Each session is a mini vacation that stays with me until the next one. Our instructor, keeps the focus on YOU. You stretch and hold while you are strengthening your muscles and mind. Time slows even though the session goes by so quickly. You find yourself not wanting to leave the euphoria you have found on your mat. What a gift to yourself, regardless of living with or without a condition like Parkinson’s.
If you are not sure whether yoga is for you, give it a try. You may want to start with arm chair or sitting yoga as I did. My first few classes were taught at Bodies in Balance (see my post, MOVE) by a fabulous physical therapist whose voice was soothing and calming. She gave me the confidence to continue with yoga and even try different classes. I look forward to my yoga journey ahead.
