Parkinson’s Party Hardy

Parkinson’s Party Hardy

So here is the reality of having a chronic disorder such as Parkinson’s. You play, you pay! But most of the time it is soooo worth it. Let me explain. I have always loved to dance and listen to good music. I have attended many theme parties and weddings and enjoy getting all dressed up and stepping out with my hubby for a special date night. This past weekend, we attended a great Valentne’s Party at out local yacht club.

I wore a snazzy red dress and ruby-red pumps highlighted by some heart-shaped bling on my necklace, earrings and bracelet. I felt like I looked the part and was ready to eat, drink and dance. Now if only my Parkinson’s cooperates.

In order to prepare for the night’s facidities, I made a very conscious effort to rest most of the afternoon and took a nap to store up some dopamine. It worked. I made it through many dances and actually stayed for most of the celebration. However, I did have a few PD issues and thought I would just highlight them for those who may also experience such symptoms.

When I do get fatigued, my neck and face muscles seem to “lock” or tighten and it is tough to turn my head. It is a weird sensation, but always goes away the next day after I get some rest. With PD, it is typical to have muscle rigidity.

It is also common for Parkinson’s patients to feel leg pains. I sometimes feel like my legs are going to explode from the tremors. When the muscles are very tired, the tremors seem to be pronounced. After taking my medication and resting, everything regroups and I feel much better.

In summary, sometimes when you have a chronic condition, it takes a bit of extra energy to go above and beyond a normal day, but it may be worth it. Do not think you have to limit your fun time because you have a medical condition. Just try to plan ahead, get extra rest before the event and make sure you allow yourself some recoup time. Even if you have. Parkinson’s Disease, you can still party hardy.!!!!
